Tower Cancer Research Foundation (TCRF) was established in 1996 by a group of determined physicians, patients, and volunteers with a personal stake in cancer. We fund leading local scientists and researchers, making us a launchpad for additional funding and discoveries here and on the global stage. Our focus is funding cutting edge scientific research to uncover the mechanisms by which cancer develops and spreads, creating a path to effectively preventing and treating the disease. Inspired by the most promising science, TCRF creates outsized impact with a 15:1 leverage ratio — $4m it invested in Career Development Grants has led to an additional $60m awarded by others to TCRF grantees for cancer research between 2006 and 2021.

 

Position Overview

The Vice President of Development is a member of the Executive Team and responsible for establishing, driving and executing development strategy, direct solicitation of funds and stewardship of major gifts. This organizational leader will work closely with the Executive Director, management team, and the Board (and relevant Board committees) to establish an overall development strategy and set and achieve annual fundraising goals consistent with that strategy. The Vice President of Development will plan, organize, and execute TCRF’s development program, including the raising of funds through major gifts, annual giving, grants, endowments, and planned giving. The successful candidate will provide proactive, creative and strategic vision, leadership, and overall management, as well as the coordination of the operational, budgetary, and personnel functions of the Development Department.

The Vice President of Development is responsible for leading TCRF’s fundraising team to achieve the assigned outcomes for their area in support of its annual and long-term development goals. This leader is responsible for creating the overall development vision, strategies and metrics for TCRF, working with Executive Director, Chair of the Development Committee, The Magnolia Council, and other professional and volunteer leaders to infuse a philanthropic culture into the TCRF’s work. The role represents a unique opportunity for impact-driven candidates with a desire to collaborate with new leadership to scale an organization advancing groundbreaking research to benefit those directly and indirectly impacted by cancer.

Professional Experience/Qualifications

The Vice President of Development must be an advocate for TCRF’s mission, with proven, outgoing, and creative leadership to provide structure, strategy, and direction to the development function. The ideal leader will have a desire for continuous growth and experience growing the development function in their current and prior development positions.

Desired qualifications and leadership characteristics include:

  • Eight plus (8+) years’ fundraising experience, including experience with major gifts, corporate sponsorships, special events, and grantmaking.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a robust major gifts pipeline, with a successful track record of securing 6+ figure gifts.
  • Track record of crafting and executing strategic fundraising plans in partnership with organizational leadership.
  • Direct experience working effectively with boards, senior management teams, and external partners in development initiatives.
  • Experience leading multi-year campaigns and soliciting capital gifts.
  • Significant prospect research knowledge and experience.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), including presentation skills.
  • Experience working with a variety of stakeholders towards organizational success.
  • Self-confident, enthusiastic, and highly collaborative mindset.
  • Significant technological savvy and experience working within CRMs and related technologies within a fundraising environment (ex, Raiser’s Edge).
  • A strategic and creative thinker with the agility to balance competing priorities, complex situations, and tight deadlines. Comfort leading within ambiguity.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required.
  • Master’s degree in related field or CFRE certification preferred.
Compensation

A competitive compensation package will be offered to the finalist candidate. The targeted base salary for the position is $175,000 – $200,000 with benefits and an opportunity for annual bonus.
