The Top 3 Ways Your Business Can Learn From Sports

You might be wondering why I have chosen to include the word “Sports” in the title of my latest blog post. Maybe you’re thinking, “What does sports have to do with overall business success”? Allow me to paint a clearer picture.

Other than with my family, I spend a fair portion of my time on two things: trying to improve my business, and being involved in sports. When it comes to business, I want to be better every day. Period. I want to add value, help others, change lives, and motivate others to succeed. As for sports, I want to stay in shape, so I try and compete in sports as often as I can; however, as I get older, I realize that I am no longer as young as I used to be, so watching sports seems to be a lot safer for me, with 100% less injuries.

I recently started looking further into these two areas and I recognized a few things. I noticed that by being involved with one, you can learn a lot about the other. Specifically, I realized that these two areas have a lot more similarities than I could have imagined. I immediately focused on the following three:

1) You can’t win all the time, and that’s OK

2) Your success is dependent on the quality of the team around you

3) You must be fearless and commit to change in order to improve

In business, like in sports, you cannot win every time. You will secure some deals, and some you won’t. You will hear back from some people, while others will ignore you. Even though you cannot succeed every time, with everything that you do, that is ok. The key is to get out there. The more proactive you are, the more times you will likely win. You can’t sit back and expect your business to thrive. When it does, you receive an incredible high. When it doesn’t, however, you have to focus on the next opportunity. Just like in sports, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but you must show up the next time to give yourself another chance at success.

Although some of us like to think so, we cannot succeed in business alone. We need others to help us thrive, whether it is people who are referring others to us, clients who are interested in our products or services, or role models to point us in the right direction. Without a doubt, just like a championship sports team, you have to have a solid team of colleagues, employees, or managers around you who communicate well, believe in the same vision as you, are committed to the same success as you, and whom you trust as much as they trust you. With a supportive and high-quality team around you, not only will your success chances go up, but your confidence will too.

Lastly, you have to realize that in order to get from where you are now to where you want to be, you have to be open and committed to change. Without change, your results will be the same today as they were yesterday, and you will not grow or get any closer to reaching your true potential. With change comes more opportunity, overall development, and many more possibilities. When sports team lose, it is their responsibility to identify what went wrong, and make the necessary changes needed to improve their chances of success the next time. This is no different in business. Without committing to change, the things that don’t work won’t improve. Change can be a powerful ally if we choose to use it as a catalyst for long-term growth and improvement.

Comparing sports to business success can be quite interesting, and there are plenty of lessons to learn from it. A big difference is that business is not a game, but it should be fun! Try and be creative every chance that you get; it will help you to stay in the game and remain competitive. Enjoy yourself in your business, and understand that sometimes, losing is important; it keeps you hungry and committed to your goals. It also prevents you from getting complacent and getting too comfortable. You have what it takes to succeed, and just like in sports, if you continue to tweak your strategy and game plan every now and again, there will be many reasons for you to celebrate in any given year.
